The filter light won't reset after installing a new cartridge
Almost always one of three things: the reset procedure was wrong, the cartridge has no chip, or the housing is not seating. Work through them in this order.
A filter indicator that stays on after a fresh cartridge is the single most common complaint in this category, and it is rarely a defective filter. There are three causes, and they are distinguishable in a couple of minutes.
1. The reset is a separate action
On nearly every brand, installing the cartridge does not clear the light. You have to reset it manually.
- LG — press and hold the Water Filter button on the control panel for about three seconds. On models without a dedicated button, hold the Alarm/Filter combination.
- GE — press and hold Filter Reset (or Water Filter) for three seconds. On some Profile and Café boards the reset lives in the settings menu.
- Samsung — hold the Filter Reset button for three seconds; on newer panels it is under Settings → Water Filter.
- Whirlpool / Maytag — hold Filter Reset or Water Filter for three seconds; on models with a display, confirm the prompt.
2. The cartridge has no chip, or the chip is not readable
GE XWFE and RPWFE, and a number of newer Samsung cartridges, contain an RFID tag. The control board reads it. A cartridge without a tag — including a genuine XWF installed in a post-2019 GE — will physically fit and filter water, but the board cannot verify it, so the light stays on.
If this is your situation, the filter is working and the light is cosmetic. Some boards also disable the dispenser. The fix is the chip-equipped part number, not a repair.
3. The housing is not seating fully
A cartridge that is 5° short of full lock will pass water and leak air, and the board may not register the insertion. Remove it, inspect the O-rings for pinching, and reinstall until you feel a distinct stop. Flush two to three gallons before judging flow.
When it is actually a fault
If a chip-equipped genuine cartridge is fully seated, the light has been reset correctly, and it still returns within a day, the housing switch or the board is at fault. That is an appliance repair, not a filter problem — and no cartridge will fix it.
