The round SmartWater cartridge used across GE side-by-side and top-freezer models for well over a decade. MWF, MWFP, MWFA and GWF are the same filter under different retail codes.
About this cartridge
MWF is one of the most widely counterfeited cartridges in the category, which is worth knowing before buying from a marketplace seller. The genuine part has a holographic label and a serial number that GE's support line will verify.
The suffix letters track packaging and retail channel, not fit: MWFP is the retail single, MWFA the multi-pack, MWFAP an Amazon-specific pack. GWF and GWFA are the older codes that MWF supersedes.
Certified to 42 and 53 at 300 gallons. On side-by-side models the housing sits in the base grille, which means the cartridge is replaced kneeling in front of an open grille door — a genuinely different procedure from the ceiling-mounted LG design.

These part numbers refer to the same physical cartridge. If the number on your old filter is in this list, this is the right replacement.
MWF does not fit XWFE housings. If your filter sits in the ceiling of the fridge, you want XWFE; if it sits in the base grille, you likely want MWF.
Which refrigerators it fits
GE has not published a model-level list for this cartridge that we can verify, so we do not publish one either. The number on the cartridge you are removing is the reliable check.

Open GEReplacing it
- Turn the old cartridge a quarter turn counter-clockwise and pull it straight out. Keep a towel under it — a few ounces of water will come out.
- Remove the protective cap from the new cartridge and check that the O-rings are seated flat in their grooves.
- Push it in and turn clockwise until it stops. Run two to three gallons through the dispenser to flush carbon fines, then reset the indicator.
