GE's chip-equipped cartridge. It looks almost identical to the older XWF but carries an RFID tag that newer control boards require before they will clear the filter light.
About this cartridge
XWFE replaced XWF around 2019. The two cartridges share a body, a thread and a seal; the difference is a small RFID chip on the end cap. Install an XWF in a refrigerator built after 2019 and the machine will not recognise it — the filter light stays on, and on some boards the dispenser refuses to run.
XWFE is backward compatible: it works in every refrigerator that accepted XWF. That makes it the safe choice when the build date is unclear, which is most of the time.
GE rates it at 300 gallons or six months, and certifies it to 42, 53 and 401. GE also sells it under GE Profile, Café and Haier brand names with the same part number.

These part numbers refer to the same physical cartridge. If the number on your old filter is in this list, this is the right replacement.
XWF and XWFE look identical in photos. If your refrigerator was built after 2019, only XWFE will clear the filter indicator.

Replacing it
- Turn the old cartridge a quarter turn counter-clockwise and pull it straight out. Keep a towel under it — a few ounces of water will come out.
- Remove the protective cap from the new cartridge and check that the O-rings are seated flat in their grooves.
- Push it in and turn clockwise until it stops. Run two to three gallons through the dispenser to flush carbon fines, then reset the indicator.
