About this cartridge

XWF is the cartridge GE fitted before the RFID change. It is mechanically identical to XWFE, so an XWFE will always fit where an XWF was — but not the other way round.

The practical advice for anyone still running an XWF refrigerator is simple: buy XWFE. It costs about the same, fits the same housing, and remains valid if you replace the refrigerator with a newer GE.

Certified to 42 and 53; it does not carry the 401 pharmaceutical claim that XWFE does.

These part numbers refer to the same physical cartridge. If the number on your old filter is in this list, this is the right replacement.

Do not confuse

Superseded by XWFE. There is no reason to buy XWF unless a specific listing requires it.

Which refrigerators it fits

GE has not published a model-level list for this cartridge that we can verify, so we do not publish one either. The number on the cartridge you are removing is the reliable check.

Replacing it

  1. Turn the old cartridge a quarter turn counter-clockwise and pull it straight out. Keep a towel under it — a few ounces of water will come out.
  2. Remove the protective cap from the new cartridge and check that the O-rings are seated flat in their grooves.
  3. Push it in and turn clockwise until it stops. Run two to three gallons through the dispenser to flush carbon fines, then reset the indicator.

Common questions

Does the XWF fit my GE refrigerator?
The cartridge fits the GE XWF housing housing. Give us the refrigerator model number and we will confirm it against the housing list.
How often do I need to replace the XWF?
GE rates it at 6 months or 300 gallons, whichever comes first. High-volume households usually hit the gallon limit before the calendar limit.
Is WR01F04493 the same filter as XWF?
Yes. WR01F04493 all refer to the same physical cartridge. The suffix tracks packaging or retail channel, not fit.
Can I use an aftermarket replacement?
Physically, usually yes — the housing is the same. The difference is certification breadth and seal tolerance. Check that any third-party part carries an NSF 42 or 53 mark, and on chip-equipped housings (GE XWFE, RPWFE, newer Samsung) that it includes a recognition chip.
